GlobalTimesOnline is committed to making journalism accessible to every reader, regardless of ability or circumstance. We believe the right to quality, independent information should have no barriers.
Our Standards
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including those with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments.
Our platform is built with semantic HTML, ARIA landmarks, and sufficient colour contrast ratios to support assistive technologies including screen readers, voice control software, and keyboard navigation.
Features We Have Built In
Keyboard navigation
All interactive elements are reachable and operable using a keyboard alone
Screen reader support
Semantic HTML and ARIA labels ensure content is meaningful to assistive technologies
Colour contrast
Text meets WCAG AA contrast ratios of at least 4.5:1 against backgrounds
Responsive design
Content reflows cleanly on any screen size, from phone to wide monitor
Readable typography
Clear, scalable fonts; body text is set at 15–16px with generous line spacing
Descriptive links
Link text is meaningful out of context — no bare 'click here' or 'read more'
Image alt text
All editorial images include descriptive alt text for screen reader users
No auto-play media
We do not auto-play video or audio; all media requires deliberate user action
Known Limitations
While we work continuously to improve accessibility, some areas are still in progress:
- Some older archived articles may have incomplete alt text on images
- Complex data visualisations may not yet have full text equivalents
- Third-party embeds (such as social media posts) may not meet our accessibility standards
We are actively working to resolve these issues. If you encounter a specific barrier, please let us know — your feedback directly shapes our roadmap.
Browser and Assistive Technology Support
GlobalTimesOnline is tested with the following combinations:
| Assistive Technology | Browser | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| NVDA | Chrome / Firefox | Windows |
| JAWS | Chrome / Edge | Windows |
| VoiceOver | Safari | macOS / iOS |
| TalkBack | Chrome | Android |
| Voice Control | Safari | iOS |
Text Size and Display
You can increase or decrease text size using your browser's built-in zoom (Ctrl + + on Windows / ⌘ + + on Mac). Our layout is designed to remain usable at up to 200% zoom.
If you prefer higher contrast or a specific colour scheme, your operating system's accessibility settings or a browser extension such as Dark Reader will work with our platform.
